Character's name: Mong Ryong Character's age: In his own words, “barely an adult” Character's gender: Male Series the character is from: Legend of Chun Hyang Point in canon they're being taken from: After the first (and only ;__;) volume Brief background: Legend of Chun Hyang, loosely based on an old Korean legend, takes place in the land of Koriyo, which, we are informed, is divided into several districts where each district is under rule of a Yang Ban selected by the Chun-An government that controls the entire nation. These Yang Ban are elected for a period of ten years each, and are supposed to look to the good of their respective district and its people. The price for defying a Yang Ban is death. In the small town of Ryon Fi, our young, hotheaded heroine Chun Hyang lives with her mother Wall Mae, who is famed as the best Mudang (medicine man/woman) in the country. The people of Ryon Fi has endured years of oppression under the rule of a particularly ruthless Yang Ban, Chun Hyang being the only one brave enough to stand up to him and his equally cruel son. One day, a stranger shows up out of nowhere in Wall Mae’s yard, presenting himself as Mong Ryong, a traveller who has heard of Wall Mae’s work and therefore is interested in meeting her. Despite Chun Hyang’s protests, Mong Ryong ends up staying as a guest in their household for an entire week - which is about how long it takes for her to actually start grudgingly referring to him by name – during which he subtly goes about learning more about the village and its ruler. When Wall Mae is abducted by the Yang Ban for her and her daughter’s disobedience, Chun Hyang immediately sets off to the castle to rescue her, accompanied by Mong Ryong. However, they are too late – when they arrive, Wall Mae has already taken her life rather than being raped. Utterly furious, Chun Hyang makes as to kill the Yang Ban, but hesitates when he says that the entire village will be punished if she dares harm him. It is then that Mong Ryong reveals his true identity – he is, in fact, the legendary Am-Hang-Osa, the magic-wielding highest-ranking official of the Chun-An government, whose task is to see to that every Yang Ban stays true to their oath of working for the good of the people. He alone has the authority to pass judgment on any Yang Ban, and, declaring that he has now seen enough proof of this particular one’s misdeeds, tells Chun Hyang that she is allowed to avenge her mother, which she willingly does. After this ordeal, Mong Ryong announces that the Chun-An will set to choosing a new ruler for Ryon Fi, and that he himself must continue his travels to investigate the situation in other towns. He then asks if Chun Hyang would be willing to accompany him, as “there are people he would like her to meet.” Chun Hyang agrees (with the reservation that it doesn’t mean she has to like him), and thus, they set out on a journey together. Mong Ryong secretly carries with him an amulet, recognisable to everyone in Koriyo as proof of his position, which he can cause to morph at will into a sword or a flying tiger that he uses either to fight for him or as means of transportation. Since he is obviously concerned about Chun Hyuang’s becoming physically and emotionally mature enough to deal with whatever CLAMP had in store for her before hiatusing the series, it can possibly be assumed that he knows of her mysterious father, whose identity seems to be a big plot-point yet to be revealed. Personality: Mong Ryong initially comes off as a happy-go-lucky man with a taste for the simple joys in life – good food and beautiful women, mainly – and often uses these interests as a cover reason for staying in a village while investigating. This laid-back attitude is not a mask per se, but rather the side of himself he usually shows, seeing as he seems to genuinely enjoy eating aplenty and is appreciative of ladies. Chun Hyang frequently accuses him of lacking integrity because of this, but he does appear to have certain standards: genuinely apologizing for lying about his identity and, while he openly courts Chun Hyang’s mother and the older of the Mudang sisters they meet while travelling, when it comes to the the younger girls, he settles for simply calling them “very cute.” He is chivalrous yet enjoys Chun Hyang’s flustered reactions, although he also proves himself to be kind and considerate on several occasions when he silently comforts Chun Hyang about the loss of her mother. When in the role of the Am-Hang-Osa, however, he is dead serious, authoritative and, if the situation calls for it, even ruthless. | ||||||||||
